The General Stores, Mill End, Mitcheldean, GL17 0HP

(Entrance round the back in New St, opposite KCL Hair Salon)

If you are sat nav-ing, you will probably find The Stenders, which Mill End becomes when it starts to climb the hill out of Mitcheldean, so follow directions for The Stenders – Mill End is a very short stretch of road as the historical name suggests!

When you see this property, turn left immediately after it and then left again into the gravel car park. Or drive on up The Stenders after this house, turn left into Baynham Road then first left into New St. You will see the entrance to Mill End at the bottom of the lane.

NB the main entrance for guests to the house is not through either of the doors by the stone steps at the rear of the car park, but through the large wooden gates, past the BBQ, into the courtyard garden and into the oak and glass room.

Directions

Below are maps and instructions on getting there and finding the house.

If travelling from Bristol by car –

By far the quickest route is via Chepstow and along the A48 towards Gloucester on the Welsh side of the river. This avoids all the small villages in The Forest itself, and any potential rush hour traffic or road works in Gloucester.  Remember to take the left hand slip road off the M4 signed Forest of Dean and Chepstow, after the brow of the hill, and go over the OLD BRIDGE – if you go over the new bridge by mistake, take the M48 back to Chepstow on the Welsh side of the river!

Proceed along the A48, and through Newnham on Severn – about 30 minutes. Out the other side of Newnham, and through Broadoak, and under a railway bridge – you will pass Glevum Conservatories on your right, and a Texaco Garage on your left. Continue up the hill after the Texaco Garage. You will see signs, on the right hand side of the road, to Flaxley and Mitcheldean. The turning itself is on the left and fairly concealed, on the brow of the hill, before a cottage.

Mitcheldean is 4 miles from this point, along beautiful country lanes. Follow signs for Flaxley, past the abbey and chapel, and then proceed right to Mitcheldean. Once you enter Mitcheldean, at The Lamb pub, turn left onto the mini roundabout, and then immediately right. When you see the church infront of you and the now closed George pub on your right hand side, turn left into Mill End St.

If travelling from London or the North –

Come off the motorway at Gloucester, and leave it on the A40 – the Ross and Monmouth Road. Continue on the A40 and follow signs for Ross-on-Wye, until you reach the village of Huntley. Then turn left at the lights, taking the A4136 for Monmouth. On arrival into Mitcheldean, The Lamb Pub will be on your left. Turn right at the mini roundabout and proceed over the brow of the hill. When you see the church infront of you and The George pub on your right hand side, turn left into Mill End St.

Parking

The gravel car park is fairly tight but can accomodate ten to twelve cars on the basis of those in first will be the last out.  Congratulations to the Joyce Hen Party Crew who displayed the most orderly and sensible parking we have ever seen.  Twelve cars in the car park and room for two more! Go Girls!  It can be done!
